Handyman Invoice App: Price by the Task, Get a Yes First
By Jeff Burt, founder of Invoice Goat.
Price a list of small jobs task by task. Price a problem you have to track down by the hour. Send the quote from the driveway and have the customer sign off on their phone before you start. Anything added on site goes on the invoice after they say yes.
What you need from an app is to make all that take two minutes in the driveway: your task prices saved, the customer's approval from a link, and the quote turned into the invoice without retyping a line.
Should You Charge by the Task or by the Hour?
Here's one homeowner's list, texted to you on Thursday for a Saturday visit. The prices are made up for the example. Set your own.
| Line on the quote | Price |
|---|---|
| Mount a 65" TV on drywall (customer's bracket) | $130.00 |
| Hang three floating shelves | $75.00 |
| Replace front door weatherstripping | $70.00 |
| Fix running toilet: flapper and fill valve (labor) | $85.00 |
| Part: flapper and fill valve kit | $24.00 |
| Patch doorknob hole in hallway drywall, paint-ready | $95.00 |
| Quote total, by the task | $479.00 |
The same visit by the hour: 4.5 hours on the jobs plus an hour for setup, cleanup and the run to the store is 5.5 hours. At $75 an hour that's $412.50, plus the $24 part, so $436.50.
The two totals land close, and that's the point. By the task, the customer knows the price of every line before you show up and can cross off the shelves if the total is too high. You get paid for the job, not for how fast you are. Finish in four hours and you keep the difference. Find no stud where they want the TV and you lose the extra half hour, so price the tricky tasks a little higher.
By the hour wins when you can't see the job yet. “The back door sticks, can you figure out why?” could be a loose hinge screw or a frame that moved. Quote that one by the hour with a minimum, say $85 for the first hour and $75 an hour after, so a ten-minute fix still pays for the drive. One handyman on r/handyman said of the estimates in QuickBooks: “I just do small things on an hourly basis so I don't use that.” The minimum is what makes that work.
How Do You Get the Customer's Yes Before You Start?
Build the quote from your saved task prices and send it before you unload the truck. The customer opens the link on their phone, taps approve and signs with a finger. Their signature, with the date and time, prints on the quote PDF. Now you both have the same list and the same prices in writing.
Then the visit changes, the way visits do. There are two kinds of add-on:
- They ask for something new. “While you're here, can you hang the bathroom mirror?” Tell them the price, $50, and get the yes in a text before you start.
- You find something. Doing the weatherstripping, you see the door sweep is torn. Text a photo and the price, $14 for the sweep and $20 to put it on, and wait for the yes.
Both go on the invoice, not the quote. We keep the quote and the invoice separate in Invoice Goat on purpose: you edit the invoice to add what changed and the quote stays as it was signed. That way you can lay what you agreed to next to what you did. For bigger changes, the kind that need a signature before any work, see how to invoice as a contractor.
What Does the Customer Get When You Leave?
The invoice. You turn the approved quote into an invoice and every line comes over, so you only add what changed.
| Line on the invoice | Amount |
|---|---|
| The six quote lines above, as approved | $479.00 |
| Hang bathroom mirror (asked for on site) | $50.00 |
| Part: door sweep (old one torn) | $14.00 |
| Install door sweep (labor) | $20.00 |
| Invoice total | $563.00 |
The customer can pay right there by card or bank transfer from the invoice on their phone. If they hand you cash or a check, or send it by Zelle, you mark it paid yourself.
For a one-off PDF, the free handyman invoice template fills in a visit like this one. It also covers the state dollar limits on jobs done without a contractor's license.
Do the Cheap Plans Cover a Month of Visits?
Every visit is two documents: a quote and an invoice. So check what the plan counts before you check the price. Here are each app's plans for one person at list price, without promotions, as of October 23, 2026.
| Plan | Price | Quotes and invoices | Online card fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Joist Basics | $10/mo, or $8.34/mo billed yearly | Up to 5 documents a month | Not shown |
| Joist Pro | $17/mo, or $14.17/mo billed yearly | Unlimited documents and clients | Not shown |
| Invoice Simple Essentials | $6.99/mo | 3 invoices a month | Not shown |
| Invoice Simple Plus | $14.99/mo | 10 invoices a month | Not shown |
| Invoice Simple Premium | $21.99/mo, or $219.99/yr | Unlimited | Not shown |
| Square Invoices Free | $0/mo | No cap shown | 3.3% + 30¢ online |
| Jobber Core | $49/mo, 1 user | No cap shown | 2.9% + 30¢ |
| Housecall Pro Basic | $79/mo, or $59/mo billed yearly, 1 user | No cap shown | Not compared |
| Invoice Goat | $79/mo, or $69/mo billed yearly | Unlimited quotes, invoices and customers | About 3% + 30¢ |
Do the math on the capped plans. Five documents a month is two visits and a spare. Three invoices a month is three visits. A handyman doing even two visits a week runs out of either one in the second week.
Invoice Goat has no count to watch. One plan covers every quote, invoice and customer, the price is right there on the pricing page, and when you need help, it's me who answers.
Questions
Is there a free handyman invoice app?
Square Invoices has a plan with no monthly fee; you pay a fee on each card payment instead. Joist's free plan is no longer available. With Invoice Goat, your first quote and first invoice are free, with every feature and no credit card, and the trial never expires.
Do I have to download an app?
Not for Invoice Goat. It runs in the browser on your phone, tablet or computer, so there's nothing to install. Your customer doesn't need an app either: they open the quote or invoice from a link.
What if the customer doesn't check email?
Copy the quote's link and text it to them from your own phone. They open it, approve it and sign with a finger. The invoice works the same way.
